Local Area & Restaurants

The apartment is located in the Prati/Vatican Neighborhood and just a few steps from the Vatican Museums and the Basilica of St. Peter.

The Metro Ottaviano- SanPietro (Line A) is 200 meters away (218 yards), with direct line to Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Steps) , Piazza del Popolo, and Termini Railway Station and other turist destinations.

The area is full of restaurants , trattorias , pizzerias, and 5 minutes walk from the apartment there is a local market ' Mercato Trionfale ' where you can shop for fresh bread, pasta, sausage, meats, produce and wine every day.

Do not go to Restaurants that display   ‘Menu Turistico’

The following is a short list of Restaurants I recommend:

GalloBrillo’ a Trattoria with specializes in home cooked Roman Cuisine. Dishes range from ‘half sleeves’ alla Carbonara, Ossobuco with peas, Rabbit cacciatore and many more regional dishes .

Viale delle Milizie, 116 (closed on Sundays) . Casual wear but need to reserve a table if going in the evening. Tel. 06 37 24 088 www.gallobrillo.it

'Il Ragno d'Oro' , excellent food, you need to reserve a table in as they are always full.

Via Silla, 26 (closed on Sundays) tel. 06/3212362. www.ragnodoro.org/en

One of the best Pizza in Rome and cheap is’ Pizzeria Giacomelli’ in Via Faa’ di Bruno no. 25, 5 minutes walk from the apartment. Casual (closed on Mondays). Opening times 12.30 - 14.30 and 19.30 - 23.30

L’Isola della Pizza ‘ in Via degli Scipioni, 45 is also very good. Opening times 12.30 - 15.00 and 19.30 - 24.00 hrs (Closed on Wednesdays)

'Osteria dell’Angelo' (Corner Via Simone de Saint Bon with Via Giovanni Bettolo – two minutes walk from the apartment) opens at 8pm (Closed on Sundays). Fixed meal €25 in the evening (2010 price) , they give you antipasto, you choose from 4 or 5 selections of pasta and then 4 or 5 main course (fish or meat). Finally they give you biscuits and sweet wine. Bottle of water included. House wine is fine and you can buy it by the ½ or full litre. If you are hungry this is the place to go. You need to reserve. Tel. 06/3729470. This restaurant is not suitable if you are vegetarian.

Slightly more upmarket (main courses are around €12) and very good food including Pizza just round the corner ‘Ristorante/Pizzeria Bella Napoli’ , Via Simone de Saint Bon 51/61. Opens at 7.30 pm . Full of Romans ! Closed on Mondays. Tel. 06/37518016

Near the Spanish Steps and Via Condotti: ‘Trattoria da Gigi’ in Via Belsiana 94 (closed on Tuesdays) , cost per person with wine € 22. Very good food, typical roman. Casual. You need to reserve tel. 06/679 1130

Top of Spanish Steps near Via Veneto: ‘ Vladimiro’ in Via Aurora, 37 . Cost per person € 40/50 . Very good food. Smart Dress . You need to reserve tel. 06/481 9467

Tipping in Restaurants:

A cover charge ' Coperto' ( usually about € 2.50 per person for bread and so on) is always included, a service charge sometimes, so check the bill or ask. In any case the service is unlikely to go the waiter , so a couple of Euros is always appreciated - and also makes sense if you will be eating there again.

If there is no Service or Cover Charge 10 per cent is sufficient.

There are two supermarkets within reasonable walking distance.

The first supermarket is called NaturaSi’ in Via Giovanni Bettolo 44 (just round the corner from the apartment). Opening times: Mondays 4pm to 8pm - Tuesdays to Thursdays 9.30am to 1.30pm and 4pm to 8pm and Fridays and Saturdays 9.30m to 8pm . Closed on Sundays. This mini market specializes in organic products therefore you might find it more expensive.

The second is called Punto Simply in Viale Mazzini 153. Opening times   Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 8 pm (Sundays open until 12 noon).

P.S. You can look up the addresses on www.tuttocitta.it

Near the apartment there are also small grocery shops where you can buy food for lunch/supper without going to the supermarket.

Street Market

There is a fantastic covered market called ‘Mercato Trionfale’ in Via Andrea Doria

(5 minutes walk from the apartment) . Great place to stock up on meats, cheeses, vegetables, bread, etc.

You can also find gifts to bring home.
